Business Destinations Magazine recently released its Business Destinations Travel Awards, and Reykjavík was named the Best MICE Destination in Europe for 2017! For the first time ever, Iceland’s capital is being recognized for going above and beyond in providing useful and enjoyable locations for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events).
Now in its 6th year, the Business Destinations Travel Awards rewards businesses and centers for exceptional contributions and excellence in the world of business and travel. And it’s no wonder that Reykjavík was named a top destination; the capital’s unique architecture, popular attractions and natural wonders draw in visitors and business travelers from all over the world each year. Luckily, Reykjavík has the capability to host these large crowds thanks to high-tech infrastructure, security and frequent air access from cities across Europe and North America.
According to a report by Iceland Tourism Research & Consulting, 2016 was an especially beneficial year for the MICE sector in Iceland. For the first time, Iceland welcomed over 100,000 MICE travelers and enjoyed a 21% growth in MICE tourism.
“I am very honored that Reykjavík has been named the best MICE destination in Europe in 2017 by the distinguished company Business Destinations Magazine,” says Áshildur Bragadóttir, director of Visit Reykjavík and chairman of the board of Meet in Reykjavík. “Our city is situated in the midway between Europe and North America and known for being a friendly city with strong infrastructure, without the stress that usually follows a cosmopolitan metropolis.”
This isn’t the first time Iceland has been noticed for its distinguished service centers. In 2016, Harpa was recognized as the Best Meeting and Conference Center in Europe, and in 2015 Fríhöfnin was honored as the Best Airport Tax-free Shopping Service Providers.
