Reykjavik Arts Festival May 20 to June 5

Make sure not to miss the opportunity to participate in the unique atmosphere in Reykjavík during the Reykjavík Arts Festival, which brings joy and delight to Iceland’s residents and guests in May each year. The Festival takes pride in its focus on all art forms – theatre, dance, music, literature and visual arts and promotes the vibrant Icelandic art scene as well as the international culture with exceptional performances, exhibits and events.

The performing arts are a prominent feature of this year‘s programme, which is best desribed as a feast of music and dance, brimming with exiting concerts of all kinds, striking dance performances and colorful theatre experiences for all ages. A spirit of collaboration of many art forms can be felt in many events this year, opening doors to inspiring experiences for audiences and artists alike.

Guests of this years‘ Festival will be among the first to attend events in the halls of the brand new Concert and Conference hall Harpa, which opens its doors just in time for the 2011 Festival. One of the biggest event of this year‘s festival is without doubt on May 21, when German tenor Jonas Kaufmann performs with the Iceland Sympnony Orchestra at a gala concert in Harpa‘s main concert hall. Kaufmann, internationally recognized as one of the most important artists of our day, will sing French and Italian opera arias with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Schrottner. Another superstar of the classical world, the beloved American soprano Barbara Bonney, will also perform a solo recital at the Festival on June 5.
