Ragnar Kjartansson, one of the Iceland’s most celebrated performance artists, will be coming to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. October 14, 2016 through January 8, 2017 with an unprecedented solo exhibition.
Known for his cutting edge and humorous work, Kjartansson comes from a family of Icelandic actors and draws upon his own life experiences to create his work, which combines theater with experiments in repetition and endurance. Some themes Kjartansson touches on include death, birth, and family, mixed with commentary on politics and Western culture.
This exhibit features Kjartansson’s most celebrated works, including: God, The End-Venezia and The Visitors, with special screenings of A Lot of Sorrow, a recorded endurance performance featuring the band The National as they performed their song “Sorrow.” Visitors will also be able to experience a live performance of Kjartansson’s “Women In E” played by a rotating cast of Washington area musicians.
Kjartansson’s solo exhibitions have appeared at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. In 2009, Kjartansson became the youngest artist to represent Iceland at the Venice Biennale.
