In 1973, a US Navy airplane (a Douglas Super DC-3) crashed on a black sand beach in southern Iceland. The reason for the crash remains an eerie mystery, but amazingly, all crew members survived. The plane was abandoned and never recovered.
More than 40 years later, the weather-beaten plane remains right where it crashed on Sólheimasandur Beach, about 115 miles southeast of Reykjavik. The site has become a bit of a tourist destination, with most visitors arriving on superjeeps.
The Daily Mail recently published an article featuring some incredible photos of the wreckage. The photographer, Eric Cheng, said “Once we left the main road, it was about 15 minutes of driving on a huge black-sand beach, which was pretty incredible in itself.” Cheng also added, “The terrain in Iceland is otherworldly-often during the trip, I felt as if I were roaming around on alien landscapes.”
