The much-anticipated science fiction film “Oblivion,” which showcases Iceland’s spectacular landscapes and features Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko and Morgan Freeman, hits theatres this Friday, April 19th. “Oblivion” is one of many films set in or filmed in Iceland from the past year, which has contributed to the impressive comeback of the Icelandic film scene in 2012.
Based on Kosinski’s own radical comic book series, “Oblivion” is set in the year 2073 and focuses on the future of Earth. Former Marine Commander Jack Harper, played by Cruise, is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. He is part of a massive operation to extract essential resources after decades of war with a dangerous threat known as the Scavs.
Harper lives among magnificent skies and and patrols them from above, but his existence is brought crashing down to earth when he rescues a beautiful stranger, played by Kurylenko, from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces Harper to question every he knows, and ultimately, puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
Although “Oblivion” has not opened for the public yet, there are already several positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes, which currently ranks the movie as “fresh” with a rating of 66%, highlighted the film’s “visually striking” scenery.
According to Cruise, in addition to the exhilarating plot lines, the actual filming was also an exciting and unique experience for the cast.
“To be the first person to ride a motorcycle across landscapes in Iceland was amazing,” said Cruise. “When we were there, the sun never went down. We were up for 24 hours. I got to ride motorcycles where no one else is allowed to.”
