A modern day take on the biblical story of Noah’s Ark, NOAH, starring Russell Crowe, premieres in theatres and IMAX on March 28, 2014. As we’ve mentioned before, the $130 million adventure/drama was filmed in southern Iceland. Icelandic filming locations include Dyrhólaey, Háaleiti og Bústaðir and Reynisdrangar, among others.
In addition to Russell Crowe, the film features several a-list cast members like Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Hopkins. In the story, Noah is given a divine mission of building an ark to save creation for an impending flood. The film was written and directed by Darren Aronofsky, known for his work on Black Swan. Aronofsky said “I have wanted to shoot in Iceland since I first visited in the ‘90s. It is one of the most unique and inspiring landscapes on the planet. The crew is top notch and many have become like family. I look forward to returning with future films.”
Russell Crowe seemed to have bitter sweet feelings about Iceland, as he reflected on the country’s unique combination of hautning beauty and harsh weather: “I’m living on a vast plain of volcanic ash in the lee of a volcanic glacier. The commute to work is a hike up a mindout… Wind tears the volcanic desert, ash and sand arcing in 40 foot waves across the plain, in the distance the somnambulant glacier leaks.”
So far the film has received mostly positive reviews from critics and has a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 14 reviews. Movieline’s Pete Hammond said that “It stays with you long after you leave the theater. This ‘Noah’ is unlike any other film of its kind – an intimate and stirring new take on a biblical story we only thought we knew.”
Several big Hollywood movies and popular TV shows have been filmed in Iceland, including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Batman Begins, Thor, The Dark World, Oblivion, Game of Thrones and The Amazing Race, to name a few.
