Each year, musicians worldwide are honored and recognized for their contributions to the music industry at the annual Grammy Awards. In anticipation of the 2020 event, two Icelandic musicians received nominations, setting a historic moment for Icelandic music.
Icelandic composer Anna Þorvaldsdóttir received a nomination for Best Engineered Album in the classical genre for her album “Aequa.” Her work has been widely regarded as “striking” (Guardian) and has made her “one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary music” (NPR). Anna’s work is frequently performed internationally and has been performed by orchestras and ensembles such as the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), New York Philharmonic and many more.
Additionally, Icelandic musician and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir has been nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for her composition of the acclaimed TV show, Chernobyl. Hildur’s work has also been heard in popular movies such as Joker, Strong Island and more.
Tune into the Grammys on January 26 to see if these Icelandic musicians take home the awards and let us know what your favorite Icelandic composition or song is on Twitter.
