Laugavegur Ultra Marathon Set for July 14

Get your running shoes out because the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon is on Saturday, July 14th.  You can enter alone or with a team, but you must be 18 or older. This race is definitely not for beginners as its 55km and multi-terrain with sand, gravel, grass, snow, ice, rivers, streams, and steep hills. Despite its challenging course, the race takes runners through areas of outstanding natural beauty.

The race itself is split up into four sections. The first section is from Landmannalauger to Hrafntinnusker, approximately 10 km and an elevation of 500m. Most of it is uphill and there tends to be snow on the ground, but that varies from year to year. The second section is from Hrafntinnusker to Alftavatn, which is about 11km with a drop in elevation of 500m. It’s the highest section of the course, so runners should expect snow and ice. The third section is from Alftavatn to Emstrur, about 16km with a drop of elevation of 50m. There are several streams and rivers to be crossed during this section, but majority of this course is flat. The fourth and final section is from Emstrur to Thorsmork, 13.5km with a drop of elevation of 300m. There are some pretty steep hills and a few meter deep rivers to cross, but it’s worth it when you finally cross the finish line at Thorsmork!

If you’re up to the challenge, be sure to register before the race. Click here for more details on the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon.
