The Insider’s Guide to Reykjavik

Elevation Outdoors’ Insider’s Guide to Reykjavik features lots of helpful tips for travelers. Described as a “world between worlds – filled with geysers, glaciers, a hip music scene, lonely treks, delicious breads, Celtic echoes, a thriving guiding scene and plenty of hot water,” there’s plenty to see and do in and around Iceland’s capital city.

Although Iceland’s name might suggest otherwise, Elevation Outdoors says you should definitely bring your bathing suit! The country is full of geothermal hot springs and pools fed by geothermal water just begging you to go for a dip. Located between Reykjavik and the Keflavik International Airport, Blue Lagoon geothermal pool is Iceland’s most popular tourist destination.

Elevation Outdoors’ next tip is to bring  the kids: “It’s safe, full of adventure they can handle and rife with stories of elves and trolls.” Families can head to sea for a whale and puffin watch, or stay grounded and visit the Reykjavik Family Park and Zoo to see everything from chickens to arctic foxes. For a more adventurous trip, families can go on a full-day trip on horseback to see breathtaking volcanoes, waterfalls and glaciers. The article also mentions the Golden Circle (the most popular tour of Iceland) which includes stops at the Gullfoss waterfall,  geothermal waterspout Geysir and the site of the first parliament in the world at Thingvellir.

A necessity for every trip to Iceland? Eat and be merry! The author of this article says you have to try hákarl, or putrefied shark, skyr-filled pancakes, fresh homemade breads and salmon. And you can’t leave without first seeing some live music in one of the world’s best music cities.

Lastly, the Elevation Outdoors article suggests checking out Icelandair’s Reykjavik Marina and Reykjavik Natura hotels for a place to stay becuase of their ideal locations and desirable amenities.
