The Imagine Peace Tower Illuminates Iceland’s Sky

The Imagine Peace Tower was relit on Viðey Island in Reykjavik, Iceland on October 9th, marking what would have been John Lennon’s 72nd birthday. The tower is a work of art created by Yoko Ono to commemorate her husband and their campaign for peace.

The tower will relight every night until December 8th, which is the anniversary of Lennon’s death. It will also illuminate during the Winter Solstice from December 21st-28th, on New Year’s Eve December 31st, and during first week of spring from March 21st-28th, 2013.

The Imagine Peace tower, which was first unveiled in 2007, was created by Ono to represent wisdom, healing and joy.

In addition to the relighting of the tower, Ono presented the LennonOno Grant for Peace awards to five deserving activists— one of which was Lady Gaga.

Gaga accepted the award and grant in person at the awards ceremony in Reykjavik, where she said she will donate the grant to the Elton John Aids Foundation.

Ono says she awarded Gaga the award because “she is one of the biggest living artists of our time,” and that “she is not only an artist, she is also an activist, using her art to bring better communication to the world.”

This year’s winners of the prize also included peace activist Rachel Corrie, who was killed on the Gaza strip in 2003, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man author John Perkins, and the late journalist Christopher Hitchens.
