You might think you know all the hottest tourist spots in Iceland – Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik, Thingvellir National Park.– but did you ever think of visiting a power plant? In a recent Gallup poll, approximately half of Iceland’s surveyed tourists said they were interested in visiting one of the country’s sustainable power plants. Icelandic email newsletter Kjarninn initially reported the findings, also noting that 97% of those who said they would visit a power plant were enthused by the country’s step towards renewable energy; 75% believe renewable energy has a positive effect on how they experience Icelandic nature.
Landsvirkjun, Iceland’s National Power Company, believes the survey’s results show promise for the future of energy tourism. Of the participants, 37% did agree that the increase in renewable energy influenced their likelihood to come back to Iceland.
“Iceland is a land of green energy in the eyes of tourists,” said Hörður Arnarson, CEO of Landsvirkjun. “They’re impressed by all our renewable energy production.”
