With its world premiere at last week’s Toronto International Film Festival, director Baltasar Kormakur’s new film The Deep has received praised reviews. Inspired by true events, the film is set in 1984, when a ship capsized off of Iceland’s volcanic Westman Islands. The film tells the story of Gulli (Olafur Dari Olafsson) and how his fellow seaman handle the wreckage of their boat. Fighting the freezing Icelandic water, Gulli is unable to help his friends, but survives the tough seas himself. The rest of the film shows Gulli’s return home, where he is greeted by reporters and scientists trying to understand how a person could survive such a tragedy.
