Located in Katonah, NY, the Katonah Museum of Art promotes the understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts for diverse audiences. The Museum presents exhibitions that explore ideas about art, culture and society – past and present. From June 29 to September 28, 2014, the KMA will feature three exhibitions of Icelandic art.
ICELAND: Artists Respond to Place
The austere, beguiling landscape of Iceland functions as muse and material for its artists. Innately attuned to dramatic physical changes and extreme solar rhythms, Icelandic artists carry within them a heightened awareness of the environment as a dynamic living entity. This is the first museum exhibition in the United States to focus exclusively on the rich and complex relationship of contemporary Icelandic artists to the singular geography of their island nation. This KMA-originated exhibition showcases twelve artists whose works cover a broad range of formal approaches and media, including painting, photography, sculpture, site-specific wall-drawings, and video installation.
All artwork in the exhibition dates from the past ten years. The featured artists are Birgir Andrésson, Eggert Pétursson, Egill Sæbjörnsson, Einar Falur Ingólfsson, Georg Guðni Hauksson, Guðjón Ketilsson, Guðrún Einarsdóttir, Katrín Sigurdardóttir, Olafur Eliasson, Ragna Róbertsdóttir, Rúrí, and Þórdis Alda Sigúrðardóttir. The exhibition is curated by Pari Stave.
Icelandic Tales Illustrated by Gunnella
Vibrant illustrations and hilarious stories delight visitors young and old in the Learning Center. Icelandic artist Gunnella presents buxom ladies and beguiling animals, who frolic through an Icelandic homeland filled with strong winds, steep cliffs, and unique challenges. These lighthearted tales are painted in a bold folk-art style that is full of fun and silliness.
ICELAND: The Fire Within
Award-winning Scandinavian-American filmmaker Eric Heimbold presents a cinematic meditation on the spirit of Iceland. Heimbold captures epic experiences of Iceland’s volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, and Northern Lights interspersed with the indigenous flora, fauna, and human faces that populate this unique island nation.
About The Katonah Museum of Art
Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the Katonah Museum of Art originates ten to twelve exhibitions annually, covering a broad range of art and humanities topics. From the beginning, the KMA was committed to presenting exceptional art from all cultures and time periods. The founders’ decision to be a non-collecting institution resulted in a dynamic and flexible exhibition program, which remains one of the most distinctive features of the KMA. The KMA offers lectures, films, workshops, concerts and other events for a general audience; and presents innovative and substantive programs for over 100 member schools. Our Learning Center is the only interactive space in Westchester County where children can come on a daily basis to explore and create art. Our outreach programs for the local Hispanic immigrant population are at the forefront of community-based education programs. The KMA works intensively with schools and service organizations to develop literacy and assimilation skills among this population. Annual attendance is approximately 40,000 people.
