Icelandic Artist Elva Hreidarsdottir Featured in The Essence of Abstraction Exhibition

Located in New York City, Agora Gallery‘s new exhibition, The Essence of Abstraction, will feature the artwork of Iceland artist Elva Hreidarsdottir. The exhibitions open on March 4, 2014 and run until March 25, 2014. The opening reception will take place on the evening of Thursday, March 6, 2014.

Like many Icelandic artists, Elva Hreidarsdottir says she is “inspired by nature and it feeds my work.” However, her collographs go beyond standard ways of depicting nature. The artist does not focus on the most apparent aspects of the landscapes she documents. Rather, it is the “lines and shapes that appear in crumbling hills, broken basalt columns and weathered rocks” that attract her attention. She creates a body of work with the contours of abstraction, but one that also communicates a strong feeling of air, space and the outdoors.

Drawing directly on her printing plates, Hreidarsdottir glues and varnishes each one to mimic nature, and the sense of light and of surfaces that have come into contact with the forces of nature is strong. That sense also comes from the artist’s tonally varied palette of blacks, greys and browns, and the painterly technique she uses to apply color to the plate. While intricate and detailed, that process has an open-ended spontaneity the artist says reflects the diversity of nature itself, and that gives her work its unique appeal.
