Icelanders Are Some of the Happiest People in the World!

The UN’s 2017 World Happiness Report ranks Iceland as the 3rd happiest nation for the second year in a row.

For the second year in a row, The World Happiness Report named Iceland the third happiest nation in the world. Founded in 2012, the report considers six variables to inform its conclusions: social support, freedom to make life choices, generosity, absence of corruption in government and business, GDP per capita and healthy life expectancy. According the Social Foundations of World Happiness handbook, this six-factor framework best represents the essence of national well-being.

Iceland also made headlines earlier this month by announcing employers will be required to prove they provide equal pay to their employees, regardless of gender, ethnicity, sexuality or nationality. It is the first country in the world to introduce such legislation. This kind of policy factors into Iceland’s index in the World Happiness framework and serves as a key factor contributing to their high ranking.

With equality at the forefront of Iceland’s legislative scope, it’s no wonder the citizens of this Nordic nation are some of the happiest people in the world!
