Icelandair’s New Plane Takes the Northern Lights Around the Globe

Icelandair’s aurora borealis-themed plane offers passengers an unforgettable experience.

Iceland is one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights, and to highlight this fact, Icelandair painted an entire 757 with the stunning blues and greens of the northern lights. This project is the culmination of Icelandair’s #MyStopover campaign, which promotes passengers’ ability to stopover in Iceland for up to 7 nights for no additional airfare.

Renamed “Hekla Aurora,” the plane is northern lights-themed both inside and out. Once on board, interior mood lighting brings passengers the beautiful, cool colors of the aurora borealis. One passenger said “when we saw the lights come on it was really great feeling the atmosphere of natural beauty that you get while being in this country.”

“Hekla Aurora provides an authentic aurora borealis experience to all those who fly on her. The on-board light show provides the perfect beginning to any transatlantic flight by showcasing the natural beauty of Iceland’s famous northern lights,” said Birta Lif Kristinsdottir, a renowned Icelandic meteorologist and former Icelandair pilot.

Where does the name “Hekla Aurora” come from? ‘Hekla’ is a traditional Icelandic girl’s name and is the name of one of our better-known volcanoes. ‘Aurora’ is a reference to the northern lights.
