The tiny island nation of Iceland, has made international headlines once again as one of their volcanoes has started spewing and spurting it’s innards into the air, closing air spaces, shutting down parts of the world.
Having recently returned from a trip to that country so close to the Arctic circle, I was struck by the similarities between Iceland and the Northern Territory. It’s a bit like the Territory, it’s remote, the weather changes in a flash, the conditions are extreme, the people are unique. The centre of both places is virtually uninhabitable, the volcanic centre of Iceland pushes black peaks skyward and the cold crevices create glaciers. In the centre of our Territory we have that big red ochre desert, where only the most resourceful and knowledgeable can happily survive.
