The most recent FIFA World Ranking list places Iceland at #19 on a global list of over 200 men’s soccer teams. This is a record-breaking position for the Nordic nation.
The Icelandic team has had an incredible year of exciting upsets and victories, perhaps most notably their 90th-minute winning goal over Croatia. But that wasn’t their first; the team has been the underdog to watch since the 2016 Euro Cup when they defeated England 2-1 in their first major upset. (While the Euro Cup is an independent competition from the World Cup, it is nevertheless an important indication of World Cup favorites).
Iceland will compete in the qualifying rounds for their chance to play at the FIFA World Cup that will take place in Russia June 14 – July 15, 2018. The final tournament includes 32 national teams who will collectively play a total of 64 matches in 12 venues located in 11 cities. The final game will take place on July 15 in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium.
