Readers of The Guardian included the Seljavallalaug geothermal pool as one of the top ten pools in the world. The pool is located in Laugarárgil at the bottom of the Eyjafjöll mountain range and near the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.
Seljavallalaug is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland (built in 1923) and is 25 meters long and 10 meters wide. The building of the pool was headed by Bjorn Andrésson Berjaneskoti, a local who decided that a swimming pool should be built for children to learn to swim and play sports. Other pools that top The Guardian list include the North Sydney Olympic Pool, a floating pool in Berlin and a luxurious rooftop infinity pool in Barcelona.
Due to the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, the pool is partially filled with ash, nonetheless the pool offers stunning views and natural, warm water that’s great to take a dip in.
