Former Icelandic Prime Minister Geir Haarde is the New Ambassador to the U.S.

President Barack Obama officially accepted Geir H. Haarde’s letter of credence at a White House ceremony earlier this week. This ceremony formally appoints Geir, former Prime Minister of Iceland and leader of the Independence Party, as Iceland’s new ambassador to the United States. Letters of credence serve to formally grant diplomatic accreditation to an individual to be the sending country’s ambassador in the receiving country.

Haarde took office in January, succeeding Guðmundur Árni Stefánsson. Last summer, the Icelandic Foreign Ministry announced that Haarde would be appointed ambassador. He will serve his position out of Washington, D.C.
