As of October 25th, the Westfjords Way driving route in Iceland is officially open year round! The new driving route, Westfjords Way or Vestfjarðaleiðin, promises one of the most scenic and cultural driving routes in the world.
The route begins just 111 KM (61 MI) from Reykjavík and circumnavigates the remote Westfjords peninsula and Dalabyggð. The peninsula itself is older than the mainland of Iceland, marked by the Ice Age 10 thousand years ago, with deep fjords that provide a unique driving route along cliffs, craggy mountains, valleys, lowlands, and unique plants.
There are plenty of sights to see along the route, from boast-worthy views, to unexpected experiences, as well as natural wonders. Highlights of the drive include: the mountain pass between Hrafnseyri and Þingeyri, the Neshringur loop, Samúel Jónsson Sculptures, and Rauðasandur’s golden pink beach.
With the do-it-yourself nature of a drive, Westfjords Way is an enticing and inspiring option for anyone who wants to escape the city and experience the purest form of Iceland. It is an ideal way to experience the undiscovered wilderness complimented by the traditional culture of the Westfjords.
