It’s a new era for Iceland’s oldest shipping company! Last November, Eimskip’s Selfoss arrived at the Halterm International Container Terminal in Halifax for its first weekly delivery. The ship’s arrival marked the newest addition to the company’s Green Line route, connecting Reykjavik with Argentina, Halifax and Portland, Maine with additional seasonal service to St. Anthony, N.L.
In 2015, Eimskip only serviced Halifax 13 times per year, increasing to 33 service calls in 2017. The weekly schedule also opens up opportunities through short sea service, which is coastal shipping on the Halifax-Portland route that otherwise might have been moved through trucking.
“We are excited to finally reach our goal of weekly services to and from North America,” said Jeff Simms, managing director of Eimskip Canada. “It in uncharted waters for us.”
Reykjavik-based Eimskip was founded in 1914 and offers several different transportation services with shipping lines connecting North America and Europe. It currently operated 21 vessels with 61 offices in 20 countries and nearly 1,700 employees.
