‘The Deep’ Could Land Iceland a 2013 Academy Award

The Icelandic Film and Television Academy has selected Baltasar Kormakur’s The Deep to represent Iceland in Oscar’s foreign-language film category for 2013. Based on a true story, The Deep tells the story of a fisherman who beat all odds and survived several hours in the freezing waters of Iceland. The film debuted at the Toronto Film Festival to rave reviews for Kormakur’s captivating underwater scenes.

The only Icelandic film to ever be nominated for an Oscar was Fridrik Thor Fridriksson’s Children of Nature in 1992. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce five nominees for best foreign film on January 10, and the 85th Academy Awards will take place February 24.
