During the darkest period of the Icelandic winter, head to downtown Reykjavík for a spectacular festival showcasing the best of new, contemporary music. Dark Music Days will take place from January 26- February 2, based primarily at the Harpa Concert Hall, with a handful of shows at other venues around the city.
The festival was originally founded in 1980 by the Iceland Composers’ Society as a place where Icelandic musicians could present their work. Today, the festival focuses on getting to know new music with a big emphasis on new Icelandic composers and performers. This year’s artistic director is composer Gunnar Karel Másson, who also runs the Sonic Festival in Copenhagen.
Featured musical acts this year include the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Dúplum Dúó and Heiða Árnadóttir. You can find the full lineup for the festival here and a program guide here. Each of these acts and artists have been carefully selected to represent the best of new music and portray a cross section of pioneers in contemporary music.
