With the midnight sun still in effect in August, there are plenty events and festivals to help Icelanders and visitors enjoy every last drop of summer.
August 5-10 Reykjavik Pride Parade
People from all over the world will come together in Reykjavik to take part in the 16th annual Reykjavik Pride, a festival that celebrates gay pride and human rights. Originally a parade that attracted about 1,500 onlookers, the event has blossomed and evolved into a colorful six-day celebration that attracts up to 100,000 guests. Learn more.
August 14-20: 2014 Reykjavik Annual Jazz Festival
The annual Reykjavik Jazz Festival is an increasingly prestigious event on the international jazz scene. The festival hosts performances in a variety of styles, from contemporary jazz and the avant-garde to Latin jazz, gospel and big bands. This year’s lineup includes The Passion of Jazz, Snorri Sigurðarson, Aurora, The Jim Black Trio with Óskar, and many more. Learn more.
August 23: Reykjavik Marathon
This year’s marathon marks the 31st running of the race, with participants flocking to Iceland’s southwestern coast from all around the globe. About 1,000 runners will participate in the marathon and another 2,000 run the half marathon – making the races a bit less crowded than at larger events. Those not looking to tackle the 26.2 mile trek or 13.1 mile half marathon have the option of running the 10k, a four-part marathon relay or the 3k fun run. Even kids under eight can join in with the Lazy Town Run. Many locals and international guests start the day early by running various races in the marathon and then enjoy the rest of the day (and night) participating in Reykjavik Culture Night celebrations. August 23: Reykjavik Culture Night
The 19th Reykjavik Culture Night, which is both created and enjoyed by city residents, takes place across the capitol with celebrations in city streets and squares, in museums, businesses and even residential gardens! With more than 100,000 guests and 600 events, Reykjavik Culture Night has become the most popular celebration among locals. Culture Night marks the start of the city’s cultural year, when museums, theatres and other cultural institutions launch their annual program of events. The main objective of this festive day is to encourage participants to deliver a diverse and rich offering of cultural events with a taste of something for everyone – and a few surprises too. Events range from musical performances to exhibitions of art and architecture, all delivered by the city’s budding talent. All festival events are offered free of charge.
