CNN Names Harpa One of the World’s Most Beautiful Concert Halls

Reykjavik’s Harpa was named one of the world’s 15 most beautiful concert halls. Harpa shares the spotlight with concert halls like the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Cidade das Artes in Rio de Janeiro, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California, USA.

This article by CNN mentions that many concert halls are “as pretty on the eyes as they are dramatic on the ears.” According to a report by building data company Emporis, “These days concert halls also have remarkable architecture, offering audiences a great show even before they have taken their seats.”

Harpa was designed by Henning Larsen Architects and Batteríið Architects. The concert hall opened on May 4, 2011 with a concert featuring Beethoven’s 9th symphony. “Harpa” is an Icelandic female first name, meaning “harp.”

The Emporis report mentions, “More and more concert halls are being built that stand out by virtue of their eye-catching shapes, colors and materials.” When looking at the reflections of the neighboring harbor and expansive sky on Harpa’s glass and steel facade, it is clear why the concert hall made the list.
