Located in the capital city of Reykjavik, Borg Brugghús is one of Iceland’s most recognized beer brands. On July 25, the brewhouse took home three gold medals and one silver medal at the 2014 Global Craft Beer Awards in Berlin, Germany. This year, the awards hosted over 60 different breweries with 200 different beers entered in the competition. Bríó, a pilsner, Garun Nr. 19, an Imperial Stout, and Úlfur Nr.3, an IPA, were gold medalists in their respective categories; Myrkvi Nr.13, representing the “Chocolate or Coffee Beer” category, took home silver.
Each year, the Global Craft Beer Awards are presented by the Global Association of Craft Beer Brewers, which boasts the motto: “by brewers, for brewers.” The awards aren’t judged by experts or critics — instead, the jury is comprised of independent craft brewers from around the globe with extensive firsthand experience in their field.
The Reykjavik-based brewery was established in 2010, and has since been pushing the envelope to introduce new and exciting beers to the Icelandic and international markets. The Icelandic brewery recently began its expansion into the North American market, so be sure to keep an eye out for the brews hitting the shelves near you soon. Bríó has widespread availability in Canada, and Garún Nr.19 is currently for sale in the U.S. and will be arriving in Canada this fall.
