The Marble Caves in Chile, Lake Retba in Senegal, Spotted Lake in British Columbia and the Asbyrgi Canyon in Iceland are some of the world’s most magnificent and thrilling natural wonders, as detailed in an article from Travel + Leisure. While there is no doubt that these natural wonders are breathtaking, their mysterious origins make them even more interesting.
Legend has it that the horseshoe-shaped Asbyrgi Canyon, located in northern Iceland, was created when the hoof of a Norse god’s horse touched the earth, cutting through 300-foot-tall cliffs and flattening an area over two miles long and more than a half a mile wide.
The scientific explanation for this phenomenon is that two periods of glacial flooding carved out the canyon between 3,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Regardless of the scientific reasoning for the aesthetic of the cliffs, it’s certainly exciting to imagine a horse hoof slicing through the ancient cliffs while gazing across the green carpet of the horseshoe-shaped canyon.
