American Director Benh Zeitlin’s latest film, Beasts of the Southern Wild, took home the highest award at the Reykjavik International Film Festival in Iceland— the Golden Puffin.
Zeitlin, whose film was featured in the New Visions category, beat 11 other contenders in this year’s film festival. The director was honored at the awards ceremony on Saturday, October 7th at the modern Harpa Music Hall in Iceland’s capital.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zeitlin’s film was chosen “for its spirit of storytelling, visual inventiveness and creative audacity, which marks Benh Zeitlin as a leading figure for the next generation of independent film artists.”
Other awards such as the FIPRESCI Critics’ Award went to American director Sean Baker’s Starlet, and the Audience Award online award was presented to the French movie Queen of Montreuil, directed by Solveig Anspach.
RIFF is an annual film festival that showcases a wide variety of dramas and non-fiction films from over 40 countries. The festival highlights independent filmmaking from all over the world with an emphasis on up-and-coming filmmakers
