Basilica Soundscape will be presenting the US and North American premiere of Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson’s “Virdulegu Forsetar” for large brass ensemble, organ, piano, bass, and percussion. This major 70 minute work is one of Johannsson’s most profound and deeply moving works. Alongside the performance, Deutsche Grammophon records will be releasing the vinyl version of “Virdulegu Forsetar” on Sept. 27, 2019. This work will be presented as part of ongoing international tribute concerts to the late Johannsson (Arrival, The Theory of Everything, Sicario).
The presentation is curated and organized by composer/curator Matthew Patton (Those Who Walk Away), and will be performed by members of the Bard Conservatory Orchestra conducted by James Bagwell.
Matthew Patton is curating the concert in cooperation with The Johann Johannsson Foundation which was established by friends and family of the composer last year after his untimely death. The nonprofit organization will work on educational projects and give out grants to young musicians and well as promoting performances of Johann´s music.
On September 19th, Johann would have turned 50 and this US premiere of Virðulegir Forsetar is part of a worldwide celebration of his work through out the year.
