The Icelandic Literature Center, along with other countries within the Nordic Literature Export, are encouraging publishers to continue translating literary works throughout the unprecedented circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic to enable people to continue reading and absorbing culture.
The new initiative gives a temporary 50% guarantee of grants to publishers for translations to encourage further exchange of literature and reinforce the support for translation of fiction, non-fiction and children’s literature for the benefit of authors, translators, publishers and literary agencies.
Provided they are approved by the respective country, applications for translation grants are guaranteed a 50% grant towards the translation costs; contemporary literature will be prioritized. The guarantee remains valid for applications submitted from April 15, 2020 throughout the year as long as the current situation remains. After this, the need to prolong the guarantee will be evaluated.
Icelandic Literature Center is happy to be a part of the new Nordic initiative and welcomes applications for translation grants from publishers outside of Iceland. The next application deadline is September 15, 2020. If you’re a Nordic publisher who wishes to translate Icelandic literature, click here.
