The fifth annual Nordic International Film Festival is set to take place at the famed Roxy Cinema in New York City from October 16th to 20th! The NIFF is the largest Nordic Film Festival outside of Europe, with a mission of bringing together the Nordic region and the international film community. This year, we’re offering two lucky winners the opportunity to attend a screening of the Icelandic films A White, White Day or Dive on October 19 at 5:00 pm and October 18 at 5:45 pm, respectively! The 2019 Official Selection includes 28 Nordic and international films in eight categories, including features, shorts, and documentaries. This year’s festival also includes a new Aurora Borealis category to highlight up and coming filmmakers. Information about each individual film as well as trailers can be found on the Official Selection page on the NIFF website. The full program PDF is also available there for download. Icelandic films featured this year include A White, White Day from director Hlynur Pálmason, and Dive, directed by Elín Hansdóttir, Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir, Hanna Björk Valsdóttir.

Not only does NIFF 2019 offer the opportunity to experience Nordic film and culture, the festival is also leading the way as the first-ever film festival to offset the carbon emissions of its filmmaker’s flights. In partnership with Cool Effect, the festival will compensate the CO2 equivalent to one roundtrip flight for each film in the official selection. NIFF’s commitment to the environment does not stop there. For the 2019 festival, NIFF has committed to providing a climate-smart, 100% plant-based menu, served with recycled materials and no plastic.

NIFF also strives to highlight diversity in the film industry. As part of their commitment to gender equality, NIFF’s Official Selection for 2019 resulted in 79 percent of the films involving at least one woman in a power position. Additionally, the gender of the directors of selected films is split to be truly equal at a 50:50 ratio. The full report detailing the breakdown of female to male ratios can be viewed on NIFF’s official website

The festival was founded by Swedish actors and film producers, Linnea Larsdotter and Johan Matton, and has consistently strived to honor established filmmakers as well as support new independent films. The festival includes five days of screenings followed by Q&A’s, panels, seminars, and matchmaking events, all culminating in a red carpet reception followed by the award ceremony.
