Experience Iceland Like a Local with an Icelandair Stopover Buddy

Earlier this week, Icelandair launched its new Stopover Buddy service, which aims to provide visitors  with an authentic Icelandic experience. A perfect complement to the Icelandair Stopover program, which allows passengers to stay in Iceland for up to seven nights for no additional airfare charge, the Stopover Buddy service gives passengers the chance to explore Iceland with their very own local travel friend.

Here’s how it works: passengers flying to Europe with Icelandair this spring will have the opportunity to request an Icelandair employee, aka Stopover Buddy, who will act as their very own native tour guide. Your Stopover trip is completely customizable, too; visitors choose their “Buddies” based on shared travel interests, and the time spent together is completely up to the passenger and their Buddy.

Icelandair’s Stopover Buddy service is also perfect for travelers who are looking for unique, localized experiences that are off the beaten path. Your Buddy might take you to check out a favorite café, go hiking on a secret trail, practice yoga at a secluded hot spring or explore a favorite spot to view the northern lights. No matter what you choose to do with your Buddy, your experience will truly be one of a kind.

Travelers thirsting for adventure can spend time with Icelandair pilot Sigrun, whose passion is bike racing down icy mountains. Visitors could also pair up with travel consultant Inga and enjoy a cooking lesson for traditional Icelandic fish dishes. Even Icelandair CEO Birkir Holm Gudnason is one of the available Buddies, offering passengers a tour of his hometown and a day of backcountry skiing.

The Stopover Buddy service will be available free of charge from February 2 to April 30. Connections through Icelandair’s hub at Keflavik International Airport are available to more than 20 destinations in Scandinavia, the U.K. and Continental Europe. Visit Icelandair’s website to find out more about the Stopover Buddy service and to book your Stopover today!
