The Imagine Peace Tower is a notable landmark and work of art in Reykjavik that is recognized by locals and visitors from around the globe as a symbol of world peace. Designed as a beacon of light from legendary artist, musician and peace advocate, Yoko Ono, the tower is lit with powerful light beams every year beginning on October 9th, John Lennon’s birthday, until December 8, the anniversary of his death. Although this year the ceremonial lighting of the beacon will be limited due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, you can still enjoy the event from the comfort of your own couch and tune in as the tower lights up the Icelandic night sky!
The livestream will begin with a short ceremony led by Dagur B. Eggertsson, Mayor of Reykjavík, followed by the illumination of the Imagine Peace Tower’s magnificent light.
This year, John Lennon would have turned 80 years old. The Peace Tower is inscribed with the words, “Imagine Peace” in the form of 24 different languages, encouraging peace and well wishes around the world. The tower is composed of many individual lights that join together to form a single beam. Six of these lights travel through corridors that surround the well and reflect upwards towards the sky with different mirrors. Coupled with nine additional lights that shine straight toward the sky, the structure displays a powerful tower of light that can be seen across the city. The intensity and brilliance of the beams also continually change as they fluctuate with the changing weather and atmospheric conditions that are unique to Iceland.
