Throughout the upcoming fall season, New York City’s Scandinavia House will be showing select Icelandic films in celebration of Iceland’s centenary. The fall series begins on September 20 and runs through November 16. Throughout this period, the Scandinavia House will show the following Icelandic films: At Noon Fell a Darkness, an “Iceland in New York” film series, I Remember You, The Swan, and a selection of films from the Shortfish Film Festival.
At Noon Fell a Darkness, September 20 at 7:00 PM
The first film in the series, At Noon Fell a Darkness, directed by Derrick Belcham, profiles 15 prominent Icelandic musicians and poets as they return to Reykjavik for a winter festival and delves into a unique moment in the history of Icelandic art. Following the film, composer and cellist Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir will perform a new composition with special guests. Purchase tickets for the showing here.
Iceland in New York, October 24 at 7:00 PM
The “Iceland in New York” film series will feature short films from NYC-based emerging Icelandic filmmakers, including Thick Skin by Erlendur Sceinsson, See Ya by Brúsi Ólason and Splinter by Ninna Pálma.
In See Ya, a young football player is torn between deciding to leave his hometown of Selfoss and venture abroad to follow his childhood dreams or stay in his comfortable life. In Thick Skin, boundaries are crossed at a party in Reykjavik and consequences remain. In Splinter, a physically disabled man fantasizes about freedom and coffee. Iceland Shortfish Film Festival, October 26 at 6:30 PM
The Shortfish screening will feature six short films, and will run for approximately 90 minutes total. The first film, Arnbjörn, directed by Eyþór Jóvinsson, follows a genealogist who, despite knowing all of Iceland’s families better than most people, has never had a family of his own. The next film, C-Vítamín, directed by Guðný Rós Þórhallsdóttir, is about two girls who collect items for a raffle to support chronically ill children. The last film, In The Dark Room, directed by Anna María Helgadóttir, delves into the story of a woman who is fed up with her Groundhog Day-esque life in a boring apartment building with her husband Bror and their two children. I Remember You, November 7 at 7:00 PM and November 9 at 6:30 PM
The Icelandic supernatural thriller I Remember You, directed by Oskar Thor Axelsson, follows three intersecting narratives surrounding a series of disappearances and a supernatural presence in an abandoned town in the Westfjords region. Purchase tickets for the showings here.
The Swan, November 14 at 7:00 PM and November 16 at 6:30 PM
Acclaimed Iceland film The Swan, directed by Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir, follows a stubborn 9-year-old girl’s coming-of-age on a farm in rural Iceland as she is drawn into an entanglement that she is too young to understand. The film is based on the Icelandic novel by Guðbergur Bergsso. Purchase tickets for the showings here.
