The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is currently featuring Icelandic artist Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson in Painted Threads, a new exhibit running now through February 9, 2020. In her famous paintings, drawings and embroidery, Jónsson draws inspiration from her home in Iceland and her education living in Cleveland, Ohio.
Painted Threads showcases contemporary art in the form of vibrantly painted woven textiles. The process behind creating each of the exhibit’s unique designs differs by artist. Some participating artists paint directly onto the threads as they weave, while others, like Jónsson, thread painted textiles into the loom’s pattern.
In addition to Jónsson, other featured artists include Mark Barrow, Sarah Parke, Samantha Bittman, Crystal Gregory, Victoria Manganiello, Julia Goldman, Desire Rebecca Moheb-Zandi and Oriane Stender. A catalogue illustrating and discussing the artists’ works through essays is available at the exhibition.
Apart from Painted Threads, Jónsson has been featured in solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in New York, Ohio, Connecticut, Illinois and Iceland, as well as group exhibitions that span from Michigan to Japan.
