In Toronto this June and July, you can fill your weekends with Icelandic films, concerts, art shows and more.
June 6: Katrina Anderson’s Vegvísir (Viking Compass) Art Exhibit
Looking to get cultured? Come see a gallery of haunting, mesmerizing paintings that were “conceived in Iceland” by Toronto artist Katrina Anderson, also known as Fontana Swing (with a studio by the same name). The exhibition opens on Saturday, June 6 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, through June 20th. The Fontana Swing studio is located in the heart of the Toronto studio district on Carlaw Avenue, and is also a great space to see live performances. June 12: Have Lunch with the President of Iceland!
You don’t have to be a political leader to attend – anyone can come to this luncheon with Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, the President of Iceland! At The National Club on Bay Street in Toronto, the lunch begins at 12:00 pm and will go until 2:00 pm. The Icelandic Ambassador to Canada, Sturla Sigurjónsson, and the Canadian Ambassador to Iceland, Stewart Wheeler, will also be at the luncheon. Tickets are $50. Be sure to get them before it’s sold out! It’s not every day you can mingle with a world leader!
June 14: Icelandic Independence Day Potluck & Picnic
Celebrate Iceland’s Independence Day this year with a potluck and picnic on the Amos Waites Park! The National Day of Iceland is officially on June 17th, which is the anniversary of the country’s declaration of independence from Denmark in 1944. For any Icelanders or Iceland-lovers in Toronto who want to celebrate, the park will be hosting the Icelandic game “knubb” (a Viking game), ping-pong, a potluck, and a sing-a-long. The event runs from 11:00 pm to 2:00 pm – and don’t forget your blankets, chairs, outdoor games and food to share!
June 24: See Icelandic Indie-Folk Band Árstíðir
Hailing all the way from Reykjavík, the indie folk-rock group Árstíðir is coming to perform in Toronto at the Church of St. Stephen in the Field at 8:00 pm. The name Árstíðir means “seasons” in English, and when you listen to their trickling string-filled songs, it’s easy to see how fitting a name that is. Tickets are $27.50, and those that attend are sure to experience a hip and unique performance. Árstíðir’s newest album, Hvel, is available on iTunes now.
July 18: Icelandic Outdoor Movie Showing
Take a break from the same old Hollywood blockbusters and come view an Icelandic film! The Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto is hosting an outdoor movie event at their library, which is located on Stormont Avenue in the Scandinavian Club building. In the event of rain, the showing will be moved indoors. The movie starts at 8:00 pm.
