For the first time, the Nordic International Film Festival (NIFF) took place virtually from October 16-20, allowing people to tune in from across the world.
Based in New York City and founded by Swedish actors and film producers, NIFF is the largest Nordic film festival outside of Europe. With a mission to build bridges between the Nordic region and the international film festival community, NIFF encourages and connects filmmakers from all over the world. The programmers welcome submissions from all filmmakers, regardless of ethnicity, religion or worldview, and particularly seek diverse independent films with strong characters and storylines.
This year’s festival featured 28 films in competition across seven categories. Participants had the opportunity to view the films in competition from October 16-20. As part of NIFF’s commitment to a better future, the festival donated 50% of all online ticket sales to organizations supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.
Among the award recipients was Icelandic film, Unnur, which followed Icelandic photographer, surfer, and former kayaker as he gained new perspectives and passions following a near-death kayaking experience. The film received an Honorable Mention at the festival.
