Taste of Iceland in D.C. 2012

Enjoy Icelandic culture April 12-15.

Thanks to everyone who attended Taste of Iceland in Washington, D.C. 2012!

After taking D.C. by storm in 2010 and 2011, the annual cultural celebration returns yet again in 2012 with a variety of public events, including Icelandic culinary promotions, free live musical performances, and a film festival.

Schedule of Events

April 12 – 15 – RIS Restaurant

Chef Thrainn Freyr, World Culinary Cup Winner and Bocuse d’Or competitor, will delight area foodies with his acclaimed Icelandic culinary art. Chef Thrainn will join Sous Chef Sarah Biglan at RIS in the heart of Washington’s West End.

RIS will feature a special four-course menu showcasing fresh ingredients sourced locally in Iceland. Attendees of the four-day event will continue to be inspired by the cool Icelandic cocktail, created using Reyka Vodka, which the famed RIS bartenders will be serving. Attendees of the four-day event will continue to be inspired by the cool Icelandic cocktail, the “Reykjavik 101.”  The custom-made drink, developed by Bryan Smith, a member of the RIS bar team, features Reyka Vodka, Corsair Gin, and house made vermouth with a Meyer lemon twist.

Saturday, April 14 – Fillmore Silver Spring – FREE!

Of Monsters and Men (OMaM) and Lay Low will continue their Northern American tours during “A Taste of Iceland” when they perform at the Fillmore Silver Spring on Saturday, April 14, 2012.  OMaM, the six-person band out of Reykjavik just released their newest EP, “Into the Woods.” Radio station, KEXP 90.3 FM in Seattle, WA, has noted, “Of Monsters and Men convey a sincerity and authenticity that’s nearly impossible to find anywhere else. When you do, you want to capture it and share with everyone you know.”  Joining them on stage is Lay Low.  Lay Low, debuting her third album this year, is the alter-ego of Icelandic singer and songwriter, Lovísa Elísabet Sigrúnardóttir.  Her music is unique and experimental, it has been described as folksy, blues music with an indie twist.  Lay Low is “one of the best new artists I’ve heard in years,” said fellow musician Lucinda Williams. Both bands can be enjoyed, free of charge.

Free tickets can be obtained through Ticketmaster. (Note: Tickets do not guarantee entry, admission will be on a first come, first served basis.)

WHEN:  Saturday, April 14, 2012  – Doors Open at 8:00 p.m.

Sunday, April 15 – AMC Loews Uptown 1 – FREE!

Summerland and Inni Showing at the AMC Loews Uptown 1, located at 3426 Connecticut Avenue, N.W. One day only!  Washingtonians can enjoy a free screening of two major Icelandic hit films on Sunday, April 15, 2012.  Summerland and Inni will be shown at the historic AMC Loews Uptown 1 in the Cleveland Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

1:00 p.m. – Summerland is the story of Lára, a mother of two who is gifted with a sixth sense and the ability to communicate with the dead, thanks to an ancient elf-stone in the garden of the rundown family house.

2:30 p.m. – Inni, a double album and film, is the famed Sigur Ros’ second live film following 2007’s tour documentary Heima. Inni cocoons the viewer in a one-on-one relationship with the band and depicts how it feels for both band and fan to experience Sigur Rós live.
