Iceland is known for its extremes – it is the land of fire and ice; of darkness and light. Across the country, Icelanders embrace this duality in their art, culture and entertainment. One such example is the annual Winter Lights Festival in Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavík, that celebrates both the winter world and the growing sunlight after a long period of darkness. The program consists of light installations, culture and outdoor activities, providing entertainment for Reykjavík’s locals and guests alike. By collaborating with all the major museums and thermal pools in the Reykjavík, the festival reflects the many facets of Iceland’s bustling capital city.
This year, the festival returns from February 7-10. Almost all events are free, including the famous “Museum Night” on February 8 in which museums across the capital area open their doors and offer visitors entertainment such as dance, theater, lectures, live music, film, literature readings and much more – all free of charge! Another free event is Pool Night, on February 9. This celebration invites visitors to try many of the city’s exceptional thermal pools and the added attractions include thrilling in-pool activities, music and pool illuminations. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights while relaxing in a hot tub in one of the outdoor pools.
The Winter Lights Festival opens at Hallgrímskirkja on February 7th with the work “Passage” by artistic group Nocturnal from New Zealand in collaboration with List í Ljósi. The group will bring Hallgrímskirkja to life in an audiovisual experience of Icelandic heritage.
