The 13th annual Reykjavik Shorts & Docs Festival takes place April 9-12, 2015 at Bíó Paradís in Reykjavik, Iceland. The festival will screen a variety of international documentaries and short films; click here to view the program booklet. The following films will be screened at this year’s festival:
Documentaries
- Citizen Four: A documentarian and a reporter travel to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with Edward Snowden.
- Jurek: A documentary about legendary climber Jerzy Kukuczka, the second person in the world to climb all eight-thousanders.
- No Idiots Allowed: One a year the small and remote town of Neskaupstadur is invaded by hoards of metal fans who are attending Eistnaflug, Iceland’s only heavy metal festival.
- Sumé: The Sound of a Revolution: Greenland’s first feature-length documentary film, this tells the story of 1970s Greenlandic rock band Sumé and how they influenced an era.
- Sweet Dreams: A remarkable group of Rwandan women defies the devastation of the genocide to form the country’s first all-female drumming troupe and open the country’s first ice cream shop.
Icelandic Shorts & Docs
- The Arctic Fox: This documentary is a story of a miracle; the survival of a family of arctic foxes in a harsh Icelandic environment.
- Iceland Aurora: Filmmakers spent a total of 3 years photographing 50 locations all around Iceland for this non-narrative film.
- Just Like You: Fourteen-year-old Dora is a troubled teenager and is disconnected from her parents, who want nothing more than for her to talk to them.
- Minnismiðar / Post It: A man with amnesia is confronted with a new and unusual object in his otherwise sheltered environment in this one-minute film.
- Potturinn / In the Pot: Gunnar is a man who goes daily to the hot pot at the pool; when his daily routine is altered, he has to make an adjustment that changes the way he acts.
- Synda / Swim: Anna arrives for her closing shift at the public pool; the events of the day provoke her to reassess the lanes she wants to take in life.
In addition to the film screenings, a number of special guests will be present at this year’s festival to host Q&A sessions and masterclasses.
Laura Poitras, the Oscar winning director of Citizen Four and a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, will host a Q&A after the screening of Citizen Four on Saturday, April 11 at 8 PM. She will also host a master filmmaking class on Saturday, April 11 from 3-5 PM.
Lisa Fruchtman, an Academy Award winning editor and the director of Sweet Dreams, will also host a Q&A after the screenings of her documentary Sweet Dreams on Friday, April 10 at 8 PM and Sunday, April 12 at 6 PM.
