The Reykjavik International Film Festival (RIFF) has grown in popularity over its twelve years of existence. Founded by festival director Hrönn Marinósdóttir in 2004, RIFF’s goals have always been to present new and innovative films and support the filmmakers who create them. This year’s festival is no different.
From September 29 to October 9, filmmakers from over 40 countries will gather in Reykjavik to screen their projects. Up-and-coming filmmakers and viewers from around the world will have the opportunity to foster social and cultural dialogue through discussions of the showcased films. The festival offers a number of competitions for filmmakers, including New Visions (Grand Prix Competition) which is limited to the first or second film of up-and-coming directors. The full program for RIFF will be released in early September.
RIFF is more than just a film festival. Festival organizers encourage the interaction of filmmakers through networking, as well as concerts, photo exhibitions and more. Previous special events have include Swim-in Cinema, Drive-in Cinema, Living Room Cinema, Film Concert, Cave-in Cinema, Hot Tub Cinema and a Children’s Program.
