Iceland has long served as an inspiration for film and television producers, with many using the country’s rugged terrain and diverse natural beauty as a stage for their productions. In order to drive more high-quality film and television initiatives to Iceland, 1991 Oscar-nominated Icelandic director Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, in partnership with local industry guilds, the City of Reykjavik and Promote Iceland, are bringing a new film festival to the city this winter, dubbed the Stockfish European Film Festival.
The Stockfish Film Festival will promote European productions, industry networking, filming locations and tax rebates available in Iceland. According to Fridriksson, “Many high profile directors and actors have been shooting their films here and the country has had much global media coverage. Our aim is to offer opportunities to connect with the creative community in Iceland, which has been quite successful internationally for years now. By bringing high quality films and guests to the festival, we can create an international dialog and a strong platform in Reykjavik for such exchanges.” Click here to see a complete list of films shot in Iceland. The list includes blockbusters like Interstellar, Batman Begins, James Bond Die Another Day, Oblivion, NOAH, and many more.
The Stockfish Film Festival will make its inaugural debut at Bíó Paradís, Reykjvaik’s art-house cineman, on February 19, 2015 and run through March 1.
The festival, which is funded by the City of Reykjvaik and PRomote Iceland, was created by the Icelandic Film Makers Associateion, the Association of Icelandic Film Producers, the Icelandic Actors Association, Women in Film and Television, and the Icelandic Playwrights and Screenwriters Association.
