As we say goodbye to 2016, Reykjavik is getting ready to welcome 2017 with a bang! The city will be celebrating the New Year with a dazzling fireworks show. At 11:50 p.m. Icelandic time (6:50pm Eastern / 3:50pm Pacific), a brilliant display of fireworks will be unleashed above the city. With no firework restrictions in Iceland, almost every home in Reykjavik (more than 200,000 people) create their own fireworks show! To make the event even sweeter, the proceeds from fireworks sales in and around Reykjavik are donated to Iceland’s volunteer rescue group, Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (“ICE-SAR”).
Luckily, you don’t have to be in the land of fire and ice to enjoy this celebration; you can watch the show from the comfort of your own home! For Iceland Naturally’s 6th annual NYE fireworks live stream, we will be broadcasting live from Facebook to give our audience a more personal and informative experience! The show will begin at 6:50pm Eastern (3:50pm Pacific), long before midnight in North America, meaning you can celebrate 2017 twice in the same day! Click here to RSVP on Facebook and get a reminder to tune in on New Year’s Eve.
The Facebook Live video stream will be hosted by Icelandic TV personality, Benedikt Valsson, who will be answering questions from viewers and interviewing locals throughout the show.
New Year’s Eve is a wonderful holiday in Iceland, steeped in folklore and traditions. Festivities typically begin with a family dinner, followed by bonfires (or brenna in Icelandic), where family, friends and neighbors gather to enjoy the warm fire and celebrate the New Year with music. According to Icelandic folklore, there are several magical traditions that are supposed to happen on New Year’s Eve: cows are thought to be able to talk, seals take on human form, the dead rise from their graves and elves move from one house to the next!
