Iceland’s First Ever Journey to the World Cup

Watch Iceland’s men’s soccer team compete at the 2018 World Cup this summer!

Iceland’s road to the 2018 World Cup thus far has been nothing short of extraordinary. With a population of just 339,000, Iceland is the smallest country to ever earn a spot in the tournament.

Founded in 1912, the team’s first ever international match was in July 1930. Since then, Iceland’s team has come within inches of a World Cup qualifying spot in 2004, 2014, and 2016, but in October 2017, they finally made the tournament with a 2-0 win against Kosovo.

The team’s coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, has been with the team since 2011 and will hopefully be leading them to victory this year with the help of team captain Aron Einar Gunnarsson, midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, and keeper Hannes Halldorsson- some of the team’s star players.

Iceland will compete in World Cup group D with Argentina, Croatia, and Nigeria. The World Cup 2018 schedule is already underway with the Friendlies. See below for a schedule of the upcoming games and ways to watch and root on the team as they represent the Nordic nation on a global scale. US residents can watch the World Cup live on Fox or Telemundo and Canadian residents can watch via CTV, RDS, or TSN.
