The Icelandic Festival of Manitoba Goes Virtual!

For the first time, you can tune into the festival from anywhere in the world and join the celebration of Icelandic heritage and culture.

The 131st Islendingadagurinn, also known as the Icelandic Festival of Manitoba, will take place virtually from July 31st to August 3rd. In the Icelandic spirit of perseverance, the festival is overcoming challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to celebrate Icelandic heritage and culture on social media and the festival’s website. For the first time, anyone around the world can tune in and participate in the festivities!

Typically, the festival takes place in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada, fondly known as “New Iceland.” Gimli welcomes around 50,000 visitors who are eager to learn about Icelandic traditions, celebrate the culture, and participate in interactive competitions throughout the long weekend.

This year’s celebration will include more virtual events than thought possible! There will be a virtual Icelandic fashion show, a virtual sand castle competition, a variety of musical performances, and much more. Even the 52nd annual 10 mile, second annual 5K, and 28th annual 1 mile races will be taking place virtually! Over 215 runners have already registered, with ages ranging from 7 years to 83 years. And don’t forget to look out for surprise Viking appearances throughout the events.

A full schedule of events can be found on the festival’s website.

During these uncertain times, the festival is grateful for donations from sponsors and partners. If you’re interested in supporting Islendingadagurinn, you can make a donation on the festival’s website. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.

To prepare for the celebration, make sure you sign up for the Icelandic Festival’s newsletter. And don’t forget to follow the festival on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube
