From July 20 through September 22, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas will feature Icelandic artist, Ragnar Kjartansson’s,“The Visitors” exhibition, which he calls a “dynamic video installation.” The exhibit is a musical performance, combining Kjartansson’s passion for both theatrics and artistry, and bends the lines between “reality and fiction.” Kjartansson’s installation, which was filmed at a historic New York farm estate, will highlight Kjartansson’s lifelong experimentation with “durational performance.”
The installation itself features filmed musical performances, broadcast across nine screens. Multiple musicians are performing in separate rooms on different instruments, yet remain in sync the entire time. At the end of the installation, viewers watch each screen fade to black until all of the artists are on one screen together, walking away with their respective instruments.
The entire installation highlights the “nature of collaboration” and the “collective” emotions that come along with performing. Though each performer is singing and playing the same song, Kjartansson ensures that they all put their unique feelings and heart into the performance. Met with global critical acclaim, the human-sized video displays will allow museumgoers to feel as if they are truly visitors at the performance.
