This October, Scandinavia House, headquarters of The American-Scandinavian Foundation, will host ICELAND: Artists Respond to Place, a free exhibition focusing on contemporary Icelandic artists and the source of their muse — their country. This exhibition will offer a wide variety of art pertaining to Nordic culture, including paintings, films, music, photography and more.
From October 10, 2014 through January 10, 2015, ICELAND: Artists Respond to Place will feature 11 of Iceland’s leading contemporary artists. The exhibition highlights the relationship between these artists and the unique geography of their country, Iceland. The country is known for being environmentally dynamic with erupting volcanoes, intense waterfalls, glacial ice caps and unpredictable atmospheric conditions. These conditions are in fact the muse of these Icelandic artists!
Edward P. Gallagher, President of The American-Scandinavian Foundation says, “ICELAND: Artists Respond to Place offers a unique and very timely look at the visual arts in Iceland today, providing a compelling overview of the highly varied, sometimes idiosyncratic artistic visions to be found there.”
Curator Pari Stave and the featured artists will begin with an introductory talk, Uncommon Ground: Artists and the Icelandic Landscape on Thursday, October 9 from 6 – 7 p.m. followed by an opening reception. There are several additional events that will run throughout the exhibition, including concerts, TV series screenings, poetry readings and storytelling:
Art Afterhours will be held on October 21 and November 18 from 6 – 8 p.m. where one can enjoy the exhibition, refreshments and Nordic music among other art enthusiasts.
Decoda, an NYC-based ensemble that has been the Ensemble-in-Residence at the Við Djúpið Music Festival in Ísafjörður, Iceland for 3 years will be playing on Thursday, October 30 at 8 p.m. Enjoy a program of new music and recent compositions from the music festival.
The Cliff– Depth of Darkness/Hraunið is a crime detective series that will screen every Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Friday at 6:30 p.m. from December 3 – 12. Each episode is 45 minutes in Icelandic with English subtitles.
Beneath the Ice: Contemporary Icelandic Poetry on Thursday, January 8 at 6:30 p.m. will give attendees a chance to appreciate Icelandic contemporary poetry through conversation with performance editor Helen Mitsios, who will introduce four of the country’s most celebrated writers.
Saturday Morning Storytelling on January 10 at 11 a.m. is a perfect way to entertain children with an hour of folklore, including trolls and elves, told by Hans Christian Andersen Storytellers.
Artists featured will include Birgir Andrésson, Guðrún Einarsdóttir, Olafur Eliasson, Georg Guðni Hauksson, Einar Falur Ingólfsson, Guðjón Ketilsson, Eggert Pétursson, Ragna Róbertsdóttir, Katrín Sigurðardóttir and Þórdís Alda Sigurðardóttir. ICELAND: Artists Respond to Place is organized by the Katonah Museum of Art.
