In January, Iceland competed against 15 other teams from around the world in the 2017 International Snow Sculpture Championship. The Icelandic team of four was hand picked in November to compete in the 65-hour-straight competition against some of the world’s most talented snow artists.
The 16 teams (including China, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, India, Italy, Mexico, two teams from Mongolia, Sweden, Turkey and four teams from the USA) worked around the clock from January 24th to the 28th, carefully sculpting a 12-foot-tall, 25-ton block of snow into an artistic wintry display without any power tools!
Iceland’s entry paid homage to the Nordic nation’s Viking ancestry. The sculpture was dubbed “Ancestry in Ice” and featured a Viking ship.
