The first Saturday in September marks the transition from summer to fall in Iceland, and Icelanders celebrate it in style with the annual Night of Lights. Despite the name, the Night of Lights festival actually lasts for four days that are full of traditional Icelandic activities, concerts and more.
Since 2001, the Night of Lights has been one of Iceland’s biggest events with over 50,000 attendees pouring into Reykjanes. Visitors can expect to see the country of Iceland come together and participate in over 100 events of music, art, culture, and theater.
The festival will kick off with a symbolic opening ceremony where thousands of colorful balloons are released into the sky. Over the following days, attendees can participate in activities including art galleries and exhibitions, theater shows and skits, antique car displays and special children’s events.
During the day of September 2nd, a festive parade hits downtown! Attendees will then enjoy a live outdoor concert followed by the highlight of the festival: one of Iceland’s largest fireworks show. This fireworks display is unique in that the fireworks go off behind the Bergið cliffs and light up Iceland’s starry skies so it is quite a spectacle to behold.
